Bitget Hack Estimated Loss of $387.5 Million, AI Tools Enhance Tracking Speed

The estimated loss from the Bitget hack is $387.5 million, as reported by Chainalysis. The company has reduced the time needed to trace bridge transactions from over 20 hours to under 10 minutes using AI automation tools.

Overview of the Bitget Hack

Bitget has reported that approximately $387.5 million worth of digital assets were stolen during a recent security breach. Chainalysis has revealed that the stolen funds were transferred through 23 transactions within the first three hours after the hack, with allocations of 49.7% in Ethereum (ETH), 40.8% in Ripple (XRP), 7.6% in Zcash, and 1.8% in Tron (TRX).

Use of AI in Tracking Funds

Chainalysis utilized its AI-based automation tools to significantly expedite the reconciliation process of bridge transactions, achieving a time reduction from more than 20 hours to less than 10 minutes. This allowed for rapid analysis and tracking of the transactions across multiple chains and protocols.

Details of the Breach

On September 24, Bitget detected unauthorized transfers from certain hot and warm wallets, initially estimating the loss at $351.6 million. This figure was later revised to $387.5 million on September 25, after including previously unaccounted assets related to Zcash and Tron. Bitget confirmed that cold wallets were not affected by the breach.

Attribution to North Korean Actors

On October 1, Chainalysis classified the incident as linked to North Korean actors, stating that the total amount stolen by such entities surpassed $1 billion in 2026. Additionally, Bitget disclosed findings from Mandiant and SlowMist, which indicated that unauthorized access to wallet environments was facilitated through third-party security product compromises.
