Aztec Launches Tierra Upgrade to Enhance Privacy and Speed on Ethereum
Written with artificial intelligence.

Aztec has introduced the Tierra upgrade, its sixth alpha release, which addresses a critical flaw in the V5 proving system and significantly increases proof speeds. This upgrade also brings a range of new private applications, including a revamped zk.money.
Overview of the Tierra Upgrade
Aztec has officially launched Aztec Tierra, the sixth alpha version of its privacy Layer 2 on Ethereum. This upgrade not only introduces a new brand but also rectifies a significant flaw in the V5 proving system that was made public in August. The improvement effectively doubles the speed of client-side proofs, enhancing overall user experience.
Critical Fix Implemented
The flaw disclosed on August 7th posed a risk where an attacker could potentially forge a proof that the V5 network would incorrectly accept. Given the immutable nature of rollup contracts, the only viable solution was to create a completely new rollup, leading to the development of V6. Aztec has also verified key components of the proving system and implemented an AI-driven security testing framework to bolster security.
Speed Improvements
With the new upgrade, private proofs can now be generated in approximately one second on native hardware, a significant reduction from the previous 2.5 seconds for token transfers on V5. Additionally, deposits from Ethereum that once took an average of two minutes can now be processed in about 12 to 30 seconds due to a redesigned inbox system.
New Applications and Features
Aztec Labs is relaunching zk.money, its private payments service, three years after the original was discontinued. The new offerings also include Galactica's Private Inference for private payments to AI models, a waitlist-only private DEX called Nemi, private intents via Xochi, the Nulo wallet, and Olla for liquid staking of AZTEC tokens.
Transition Details
The transition to V6 took place on October 26th after a vote by token holders, with today marking the public launch and rebranding. The V5 network will remain operational for about 30 days to allow for any final migrations by users.
