Solana's Alpenglow Upgrade Launches on Mainnet, Aims for 99% Faster Finality
Written with artificial intelligence.

The Alpenglow upgrade has been activated on Solana's mainnet, targeting a reduction in transaction finality from approximately 12.8 seconds to 150 milliseconds. This upgrade aims to enhance user experience with near-instant transaction settlements and improved application responsiveness.
Alpenglow Launch Details
Solana's first significant consensus upgrade, Alpenglow, was successfully deployed on the mainnet at approximately 1:54 PM UTC on Wednesday, as confirmed by the Solana Foundation's Alpenglow dashboard. This upgrade is designed to drastically reduce transaction finality by 99%, aiming for a target of around 150 milliseconds.
Upgrade Features
The initial phase of Alpenglow, known as Votor, introduces a new voting and finalization mechanism that utilizes direct validator voting along with a certificate-based system. This is expected to significantly decrease the time it takes for transactions to be finalized. In a future phase, Rotor will be implemented, which is a new block data-distribution protocol meant to replace the current Turbine system.
Currently, the Solana mainnet is showing a transaction finality of 6.6 seconds with a throughput of 4,721 transactions per second based on the Alpenglow dashboard. The upgrade aims to make Solana competitive with traditional Web2 infrastructure by providing faster payments and more responsive applications.
Future Developments
The Solana Foundation also has plans for subsequent upgrades, including Agave 4.5, which will increase the number of accounts supported by versioned transactions from 64 to 96. This enhancement is expected to improve swap routes and execution prices. The Agave upgrade is currently in development and is scheduled for release in December 2026.
The introduction of Alpenglow represents a major shift in Solana's core protocol, potentially opening the door to new categories of applications. As of now, the price of Solana (SOL) has seen a nearly 3% increase in the 24 hours leading up to the upgrade, following a notable drop of 42% over the past year.
