Nine Crypto Companies Form Quantum Alliance to Address Bitcoin Security
Written with artificial intelligence.

On October 16, nine cryptocurrency firms announced the formation of the Quantum Alliance, aimed at establishing quantum-resistant security standards for blockchain networks like Bitcoin and Ethereum. They estimate that approximately 6.4 million BTC, or 30.2% of total supply, have exposed public keys, including about 1.1 million held by Satoshi Nakamoto.
Formation of the Quantum Alliance
Nine cryptocurrency companies have come together to create the Quantum Alliance, as reported by CoinDesk on October 16. This coalition aims to develop universal standards for quantum-resistant security tailored for blockchain networks such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. The members include notable names like Hacken, Midnight Foundation, Quantus, and Postquant Labs.
Security Concerns and Public Key Exposure
The alliance has estimated that around 6.4 million BTC, which constitutes 30.2% of the total Bitcoin supply, have had their public keys exposed. This figure includes approximately 1.1 million BTC that are attributed to Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin. However, current quantum computers do not possess the capability to compromise these keys at this time.
Future Threats and Recommendations
Richard Carback, the CTO of Postquant Labs, has indicated that the threat posed by quantum computing could materialize as early as 2028. He advocates for the migration of at-risk BTC rather than freezing them. Meanwhile, Bryn Bennett, the CRO of The Vault, stated that decisions regarding freezing should be determined by the governance of the Bitcoin network.
