Aptos Labs Introduces MonoMove for Enhanced Smart Contract Performance
Written with artificial intelligence.

Aptos Labs has launched MonoMove, the most significant proposed upgrade to its blockchain execution engine. Internal tests indicate that the new engine can execute smart contracts up to 55 times faster than the current system.
Aptos Labs' Major Upgrade
On October 6, Aptos Labs announced the introduction of MonoMove, a substantial upgrade to its blockchain execution engine. According to internal testing, MonoMove can process smart contracts at speeds up to 55 times faster than Aptos' existing system, which is already among the fastest in production-level blockchains.
Performance Improvements
The testing was conducted by replaying real transactions from the mainnet. Notably, within Decibel, a fully on-chain exchange incubated by Aptos Labs, the following performance enhancements were observed:
- Collateral withdrawal speed: Up to 55 times faster
- Order placement speed: Up to 22 times faster
- End-to-end sequential throughput: Up to 11 times faster
These tests simulated various scenarios, including order books, liquidity pools, lending markets, oracle updates, and payment flows.
Future Developments
Aptos Labs has identified that the remaining bottlenecks primarily lie between the execution and storage layers. The complete functionality of MonoMove is expected to be ready by the end of 2026, with plans to launch on the mainnet following governance voting in 2027.
